Water is essential to our wellbeing.60% of the adult body is made up of water. According to H.H. Mitchell, Journal of Biological Chemistry, the brain and heart are made up of 73% water; lungs are about 83% water; skin contains 64% water; muscles and kidneys are 79%, and even the bones contain 31%. Even the body cells in each organ are full of water.
Each day humans must drink a certain amount of water to survive, for proper body functioning, for health maintenance and prevention of diseases. Water is very essential as it is needed as a transporter to bring nutrients into our body cells, and carry toxins out of our cells.
For the benefit of our health, bottled spring water, filtered and alkaline water system and filtered tap water are recommended. (Do note that there are differences between distilled bottled water with bottled spring water and alkaline water.)
Depending on where you are located, tap water is constantly at risk of contamination from industrial wastes, agrichemicals and heavy metals. For example, in mid-October 2021, in Iqaluit, Canada, drinking water has been confirmed to be contaminated with fuel, and residents are advised not to drink from taps, and instead from bottled waters. Little children are advised not to swallow the water while bathing. Another common example of contamination of tap water could also come from the old and rusty pipes in the house.
An example of contamination in drinking water could come from agriculture waste. An astounding 50% of the nitrogen used by farmers as fertilizer remains in the soil and may indirectly seep into the water supply. By law, water companies have to meet strict regulations governing the cleaning of drinking water.
Similar to food which is the source of nutrients that we eat for growth and repair, water is a source of toxins that we put into our bodies. Thus, we need to make wise decisions in the choice of water we drink to reduce the toxin loads in our bodies as our source of drinking water could have the potential to improve or damage our health. Hence, the quality of the water we drink matters.
External toxins are found everywhere but this does not mean we have to live in fear. An awareness in the areas that toxins come from can help us to be more vigilant and manage our health better.
