We know that the amount and type of fats we eat can impact our LDL (or ‘bad’) cholesterol and HDL (or ‘good’) cholesterol, but what about our genetics?
Variations in a gene called FADS1 can determine how we convert the unsaturated fats we eat into different forms that are part of our inflammatory and immune responses.
For people with the ‘CT or CC’ variant of this gene, eating too much omega-6 fats and too little omega-3 fats results in lower HDL cholesterol levels. Individuals with this genotype should avoid excess omega-6 fats in their diet, and aim to achieve an optimal balance by increasing omega-3 fats intake to improve their HDL levels.
