Omega-3 Fatty Acids & Undenatured Type-II Collagen -- Anti-Inflammatory Nutrients for Joints

There are many types of anti-inflammatory nutrients that are helpful for joint structure support. In this article, I will share on Omega-3 fatty acids and Undenatured Type-II Collagen.

Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids supplementation is usually recommended for people who eats a typical Western diet that is high and in excess amounts of pro-inflammations omega-6 fatty acids.

Research indicates that increased levels of omega-6 fatty acids have been linked to the destruction of bone and cartilage among people with OA.

In addition, supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to decrease the amounts of certain proteins that are important in the pathology of OA.

In the clinical research, the combination of omega-3 fatty acids with glucosamine was more effective at reducing morning stiffness and pain than glucosamine alone.

Undenatured Type-II Collagen

Undenatured Type-II Collagen (UC-II) has received huge attention as a therapeutic agent in OA.

Studies showed that gradual destruction of joints in OA leads to the exposure of joint collagen which triggers an immune response which launches an autoimmune-like inflammatory attack on the joints. The UC-II functions like a “switch” to turn off this immune response. It does so by inducing what immunologists classify as specific oral tolerance which is the desensitization of immune response to specific agents via an orally administrated intervention.

Research has also found that among OA patients, UC-II has displayed to significantly improve daily activities and is not generally associated with any side effects.

Recommended dosage of nutrients to ease inflammation

Fish Oil: providing 1,400 mg EPA and 1,000 mg DHA daily.

Undenatured Type-II Collagen (UC-II): 10 mg daily
