Whether it’s in the form of a pre-workout supplement, or a simple cup of coffee, many athletes believe caffeine gives them a performance edge.
But it might surprise you to learn that this is not true for all athletes.
The reason for that, is in your genes!
Variations in the CYP1A2 gene determine how ‘fast’ or ‘slow’ we metabolize caffeine. Athletes with the ‘slow’ variant of this gene may not enjoy the same performance enhancing effects, compared to their ‘fast’ variant counterparts. Slow metabolizers might not experience any benefit from caffeine at all, or in some cases, it may even hinder their performance.
Fast metabolizers on the other hand, are more likely to experience performance benefits when they consume caffeine before training or competition.
