Chondroitin
Chondroitin Sulfate is a complex sugar molecule, naturally found in connective tissue like bone, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and skin. Chondroitin Sulfate in cartilage produce a gel-like material and contribute to water retention lubrication, and resiliency.
Research study has found that cartilage samples from arthritic joints had lower concentrations of chondroitin sulfate than samples from healthy joints. Studies also have shown that chondroitin sulfate reduced inflammation and stimulated a healthy balance between breakdown and new formation of bone and cartilage.
Studies of cartilage-producing cells suggest that chondroitin and glucosamine sulfates may work synergistically to defend cartilage from breaking down. Clinical studies show that 800 mg to 1,200 mg of chondroitin sulfate per day, helps to prevent advancement of cartilage loss and decrease pain in patients with OA of the knees. Chondroitin sulfate also helps to lessen pain and improves function in patients with OA of the hand.
Studies also found chondroitin sulfate is effective for improving measures of pain and functioning with little risk of adverse side effects in patients with OA. It is also worthwhile to note that data findings from studies also show that two or more years of daily consumption may be required before a beneficial effect on cartilage protection is seen.
Clinical research has revealed that treatment of OA joints with the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates helps to lessen pain, improve function, and enhance joint structure. Chondroitin sulfate also appears to relieve pain more effectively and has a better safety profile than steroids.
