Bones and Joint Health

Common bones and joints disorders come in numerous forms.  The disorders include osteoporosis, scoliosis, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, bursitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout, and others.

Most of the time, we hear or know of elderly who suffer from these conditions.  However, many young people are now having bones and joint health issues too.

Many factors contribute to earlier onset of these conditions like modern, unhealthy diet, insufficient water intake, lack of exercise and rest.  Proper treatments and healthier food and lifestyle choices are needed as these bone and joint conditions can contribute to chronic pain and disability.

Healthy joints such as wrists, shoulders, knees, ankles and finger joints allow your body to move with ease.  Bones such as the femur (thighbone) and humerus (upper arm) also contribute to movements.

Bones serve vital functions such as protection to our organs, like our skull shielding the brain.  Bone marrow produces blood cells.  Bones provide storage for minerals like calcium and release a hormone, known as osteocalcin, which helps control blood sugar levels and fat deposition.

Healthy, strong bones contribute to good health.  Bone diseases can disrupt our entire body.  As joints are made up of two bones coming together, a lot of overlap bones and joints diseases have overlapping areas of concerns.

Bones can get damaged or react to joint disease to aggravate the problem a patient has.  For example, bones are affected by arthritis, although arthritis begins in the joints.

Overall, the bones, joints and skeletal system are harder, denser, and more compact than other systems.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine theories, these are classified as relatively yang.

It pays to eat with wisdom

Healthy bones and joints are formed by eating more whole grains, beans, vegetables from lands and seas, and other strengthening foods, especially those that are high in minerals, like miso, sea salt and sea vegetables instead of table salt.

Bones and joints can be impaired by consuming excessive amounts of strong yin foods like sugar, dairy foods, oily and greasy foods, stimulants, spices, alcohol, drugs and other destructive items.  Bones and joints are also weakened by extreme yang foods like meat, eggs, poultry, and other animal foods that produce an overall acidic effect.

Excess Animal Protein Causes Bone Loss

Many scientific research groups have shown medical evidence that excess animal proteins cause bone loss.  Meat, dairy foods, and other animal foods contain animal proteins.  Excess proteins from these foods can adversely affect the bones.

In a study of protein metabolism, scientists reported that a diet high in meat and dairy produced a large amount of acid, mainly as sulfates and phosphates, which are offset by buffer reactions involving reabsorption of calcium from the bones.  Vegetables, fruits, and other alkaline plant foods can help reduce acidity and the burden on the kidneys.  Thus, resulting in less calcium and bone loss.

Dairy Increases Risk of Bone Fracture

Researchers have also found that high dairy intake may increase vulnerability to bone fractures.  On the contrary, many studies showed a diet high in whole grains, vegetables, and fruits, reduced the risk of degenerative bone disease and resulted in many other health benefits.

Most people who have been consuming high dairy products have failed to protect against bone fractures.  Hence, changing dairy intakes to plant-based milks like soy, rice, almond and oats milk are healthier and better food choices to build up our health in the long run.

Vegan diet aids recovery of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

Research studies done by scientists on active RA patients found that there was overall improvement in 40 percent of the vegan diet group as compared to 4 percent of the group who consumed conventional modern diet.

It was found that the immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody levels against gliadin and beta-lactoglobulin decreased in the group that had vegan diet, but not in the other group.

Scientists established that a diet high in whole grains, vegetables, and other plant quality foods may be beneficial to certain RA patients.
